Eggstraordinary Courage: A Science-Based Object Lesson
Topic - Courage

Bible Story - Joshua Leads Israel (Joshua 1:1-3, 6-11)
Bible Verse - "Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.” - Joshua 1:7
Objective - Kids will learn that God is the source of their strength.

Supplies: Eggs, egg container, object lesson surface, Hand wipes/disinfectant, Joshua costume

Invite a participant to the front to play the part of JOSHUA. (Optional: Give JOSHUA a costume and/or props.)

Joshua, in their time traveling through the wilderness, God’s people, the Israelites, faced a lot of powerful enemies and troubling situations. But thanks to the faith of their leader, Moses, the Israelites had faced those challenges with God’s strength.

Now, they were about to face their biggest challenge yet: the departure and death of their leader Moses and the installation of a brand new leader Joshua. That’s you.

The Israelites were worried. They were worried because a trusted leader would no longer be around and a new, mostly inexperienced leader would be taking over. And I bet that Joshua was nervous as well. Sure he had been Moses’ right hand man, but could he take on the mantle of leadership himself?

Joshua, I’m going to give you something that represents all of your enemies and all the dangerous situations you and your fellow Israelites have faced on your journey! (Hand JOSHUA the egg.) It’s terrible isn’t it?

Holding a separate egg and demonstrating the process, instruct JOSHUA to make a fist around the egg and squeeze. The egg SHOULD not break. (Have extra eggs handy in case it does.)

Eggs are naturally constructed to withstand a great deal of punishment. Using an even force, it is practically impossible to break this egg.

However, watch this..

Hold the egg above the container. Make a fist around your egg and crush it using mostly the tips of your fingers or crack the egg on the edge of the container. Invite JOSHUA to do the same thing.

God gave Joshua a simple, but powerful command in Joshua 1:7: "Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.”

In other words, God was saying, “No matter what the future holds, don’t be afraid and follow. Just follow Me.”

Instruct a team member to help JOSHUA wipe off his hands with disinfectant and instruct the audience to give him a round of applause as he returns to his seat.
